** Kari Estrin was a Boston-area publisher and concert promoter in the 1980s. Her Black Sheep Review was one of a very few
acoustic music publications in the country in the early '80s, and it united the New England folk music scene through the power
of publishing and distribution. Before Black Sheep, many folk scenes in the northeast and around the country were going under.
But by being a clearinghouse and disseminating information, the Review breathed new life into the folk and traditional music
communities in New England and elsewhere.
Kari also produced one of the largest folk music concert series in the country and was the first promoter
to open up Harvard's Sanders Theatre as a folk concert venue. In those days, one had to have an affiliation with Harvard
to have access. Folk agent legend Mitch Greenhill encouraged her to affiliate through the Harvard Folklore and Mythology Department,
which she did. Over the years she took artists like Doc Watson and David Bromberg and Steve Goodman out of the rock clubs and into
concert halls. Kari's Black Sheep Concerts promoted the first tour of DeDannan with Maura O’Connell back in the early 80s, as well as
Celtic icons Silly Wizard, Delores Keane and others, also Tony Rice, David Grisman, Nanci Griffith, John Renbourn, and others.
Kari was my first manager 1978 through 1980. She then managed Tony Rice during the recording and promotion of his
Church Street Blues record. She has over thirty five years experience in nearly every facet of the traditional and contemporary acoustic
music scenes. Maybe we can get her to work a little of her magic again up here in southern New England... we all would benefit. ~ Geoff
